Creating a Childhood for Orphans in Rural Uganda

Capital Campaign
Help us realize the dream: the first phase of permanent housing.

Introducing the New Blue House!

This article was adapted from Beatrice’s Hope Newsletter, Vol. 7. Winter 2008

Beatrice imagined it.
We’ve all worked hard to support the humble beginnings of her dream that we know as ‘The Blue House.’

We’ve planned, we’ve organized, and we’ve raised money. We now are tremendously excited to be able to share the actual plans for the first phase of a permanent house for ‘our girls.’

Dorm floor plan
It’s very simple. The drawings you see above show a double bungalow for 40 - 44 children, made of hardened mud bricks, with stucco-like plaster finishing the exterior, and covered by a sheet iron roof. An area for play is in front.

The dormitory will have a common area for study and meals, and 11 bedrooms, each with space for four girls, and a private room for the matron who will look after them. Cooking and toilet facilities are outside and behind the dormitory (there is no electricity or water system in Kazo).

There’ve been many meetings and many communications with the people in Uganda who have worked on the plans. Recently, we found additional architectural help right here in Minnesota, MSAADA Architects (see next article below).

The project team (James Garubanda, John Ocama, Sam Tindiwensi, and Carol and Jerry Roeller) received a final set of drawings from Jack Twerebere (our architect in Uganda) and after many hours reviewing them, asked MSAADA Architects to draw the 3D rendering that you see above.

We have much more to share than can fit here – full color site plans, floor plans, land survey and the blueprints. We’ve started to plan a Kickoff Gala to show off all the plans while having some fun. Watch this website for details.

MSAADA and HMI

Poul Bertelsen, a native of Denmark, founded MSAADA Architects in Minneapolis in 1980, taking its name from the Swahili word for “assistance”. The firm has offices in Tanzania, Madagascar, Kenya and India.

MSAADA has planned, designed, engineered and supervised the construction of churches, schools, hospitals and housing in many developing countries, using the resources and methods of each area. One of the firm’s guiding principles is to design and build attractive, functional buildings economically.

To learn more about Poul’s firm and its projects, visit their website at www.msaada.com. HMI asked Poul to create a dimensional overview of the site (including future phases of development) and a dimensional view of the new dormitory. Poul and his associate, Jason Krumm, are completing this work.

We are tremendously excited! The new Blue House is becoming more real, and the drawings clearly show us what that reality will be. We look forward to exploring other ways to work with MSAADA as we move to construction of the first dormitory and design of additional dormitories, the community shelter or school, and the medical center.
